Course Introduction

Expert source positioning is the strategic process of establishing an individual as a credible, relevant, accessible, and dependable source of information for journalists and other media professionals. In a competitive information environment, expertise alone does not guarantee visibility; experts must be discoverable, understandable, responsive, and capable of contributing useful insight when important stories develop. This course provides a practical framework for building that position systematically.

The programme examines how journalists identify expert sources, assess credibility, select commentators, verify expertise, and determine whether an individual can contribute meaningful value to a story. Participants learn how to define areas of authority, develop expert profiles, identify relevant media communities, understand journalist requirements, and establish positioning that connects specialist knowledge with genuine public interest and editorial demand.

Participants will explore how to transform technical, professional, academic, institutional, or operational knowledge into accessible media expertise. The course covers expert biographies, subject-matter positioning, commentary development, evidence preparation, interview readiness, message clarity, rapid-response capability, and journalist engagement. Particular emphasis is placed on helping experts communicate confidently without overstating their authority or allowing promotional objectives to undermine editorial credibility.

The course also examines the relationship between expert positioning and sustained media visibility. Participants learn how to identify relevant journalists, monitor reporting themes, recognise emerging issues, develop timely commentary, respond to media enquiries, and create useful evidence and analysis that journalists can incorporate into their work. Different opportunities—including interviews, expert quotes, panels, podcasts, features, specialist publications, broadcast commentary, and breaking-news responses—are considered.

AI-assisted tools are integrated into research, journalist mapping, media monitoring, topic analysis, expert profile development, briefing preparation, transcription, and opportunity identification. Participants examine how AI can accelerate expert-source intelligence while managing risks involving hallucinated expertise, fabricated references, incorrect journalist information, synthetic content, biased recommendations, privacy concerns, and over-automation. Human validation and professional judgement remain central to every expert-positioning workflow.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to build and manage a practical expert source positioning programme that connects specialist expertise with journalist needs and relevant media opportunities. They will understand how to strengthen discoverability, prepare effective spokespeople, develop credible commentary, build journalist relationships, respond rapidly to emerging stories, measure visibility, and establish long-term authority based on evidence, accessibility, and professional trust.
