Course Introduction

Ethical data collection is a cornerstone of responsible humanitarian action, ensuring that information gathered from affected populations is obtained, stored, and used in ways that respect dignity, privacy, and human rights. This course provides a comprehensive foundation for ethical data practices in complex emergency environments.

The program explores key ethical principles including informed consent, confidentiality, data minimization, do-no-harm considerations, and accountability to affected populations. Participants will learn how to apply these principles throughout the data lifecycle in humanitarian programming.

A strong emphasis is placed on the risks associated with data collection in fragile and conflict-affected settings, including protection risks, data misuse, surveillance concerns, and potential harm to vulnerable individuals and communities.

The course also examines practical methodologies for ethical data collection, including surveys, assessments, digital data tools, mobile data collection systems, and participatory approaches that prioritize community safety and inclusion.

Participants will engage with global standards and frameworks such as data protection regulations, humanitarian principles, and organizational safeguarding policies that guide responsible data management in crisis contexts.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the skills to design and implement ethical, safe, and accountable data collection systems that protect individuals while improving the quality and reliability of humanitarian decision-making.
