Course Introduction

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of environmental systems thinking and sustainability strategy development, focusing on how complex environmental challenges can be analyzed and addressed through interconnected systems approaches. It equips participants with tools to understand relationships, feedback loops, and dependencies within environmental systems.

Participants will explore the principles of systems thinking and how they apply to sustainability challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, and pollution. The course emphasizes holistic thinking approaches that move beyond linear problem-solving to address root causes of environmental issues.

A strong focus is placed on sustainability strategy development using systems-based frameworks. Learners will understand how to design strategies that account for interdependencies between environmental, social, and economic systems to ensure long-term sustainability outcomes.

The course also examines analytical tools used in systems mapping, causal loop diagrams, and stock-and-flow modeling. Participants will gain practical skills in visualizing complex environmental systems and identifying leverage points for effective intervention.

Attention is given to decision-making processes within complex environmental systems. Learners will explore how uncertainty, feedback, and non-linear dynamics influence sustainability strategies and policy development in real-world contexts.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply systems thinking approaches to design integrated sustainability strategies that address complex environmental challenges and support resilient, adaptive decision-making.

Duration

5 days
