Course Introduction

This course provides a comprehensive foundation in environmental scenario planning and strategic foresight, equipping participants with the ability to anticipate, analyze, and prepare for future environmental changes. It focuses on structured methodologies used to explore uncertainty, identify emerging trends, and design adaptive strategies for sustainability and resilience.

Participants will learn how to construct environmental scenarios that reflect different possible futures based on climate change, resource availability, technological development, and socio-economic shifts. The course emphasizes evidence-based forecasting techniques that support long-term environmental planning and decision-making.

A key focus is placed on strategic foresight tools such as horizon scanning, trend analysis, and wild card identification. Learners will understand how to detect early signals of environmental change and translate them into actionable insights for policy, planning, and organizational strategy.

The course also explores systems thinking approaches that help participants understand the interconnections between environmental, economic, and social systems. This enables more holistic scenario development that captures complex global sustainability challenges and uncertainties.

Participants will engage with real-world case studies that demonstrate how governments, corporations, and international organizations use scenario planning to prepare for climate risks, resource scarcity, and environmental disruptions. These examples highlight best practices in strategic foresight application.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to design robust environmental scenarios and apply strategic foresight tools to support adaptive planning, risk management, and sustainable decision-making in uncertain and rapidly changing environments.
