Course Introduction

Environmental economics and natural resource valuation provide essential tools for understanding how environmental assets contribute to economic systems and human well-being. This course introduces participants to the economic principles used to evaluate natural resources, ecosystem services, and environmental impacts in decision-making processes.

The program explores how economic theory is applied to environmental management, including concepts such as externalities, public goods, market failure, and sustainability. Participants will learn how these concepts influence policy development and resource allocation.

A key focus of the course is the valuation of natural resources such as water, forests, minerals, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. Learners will explore both market-based and non-market valuation techniques used to estimate environmental value.

The course also examines cost-benefit analysis, environmental impact assessment, and economic instruments such as taxes, subsidies, and tradable permits. These tools are critical for designing efficient environmental policies and sustainable development strategies.

Participants will gain insight into how environmental economics informs climate policy, conservation planning, and sustainable resource management at local, national, and global levels.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to analyze environmental problems using economic frameworks and apply valuation techniques to support evidence-based environmental decision-making.
