Introduction
Energy investment decisions increasingly demand rigorous appraisal of technologies within the context of integrated energy systems. This course provides a comprehensive foundation for assessing energy technology systems to support sound project appraisal, ensuring that investments are technically viable, economically justified, and aligned with long-term energy system objectives.
The course adopts a systems-based approach to project appraisal, recognizing that energy projects interact with existing infrastructure, markets, policies, and demand patterns. Participants will learn how generation, transmission, storage, distribution, and end-use technologies collectively influence project performance, risks, and overall system value.
Participants are introduced to internationally accepted tools and methodologies used for energy project appraisal, including techno-economic analysis, cost–benefit analysis, lifecycle assessment, and system modeling. These methods enable robust evaluation of project feasibility, bankability, and sustainability under real-world constraints.
Strong emphasis is placed on financial and economic appraisal techniques that support investor, lender, and public-sector decision-making. Participants will explore how capital costs, operating expenses, revenue structures, and system-level impacts affect project returns, affordability, and long-term financial performance.
Emerging topics such as renewable energy integration, energy storage projects, hydrogen systems, digital energy solutions, and climate resilience are embedded throughout the course. These issues highlight how evolving technologies and system dynamics influence project appraisal criteria and investment risk profiles.
Through applied exercises and case studies, the course equips participants with practical skills to design, assess, and communicate energy technology system appraisals. Graduates will be better prepared to support transparent, evidence-based project decisions that deliver reliable, sustainable, and value-for-money energy outcomes.

Duration

10 days

Who Should Attend

  • Energy project developers and managers
  • Investment analysts and project finance professionals
  • Engineers involved in project design and feasibility studies
  • Government officials responsible for project approval
  • Utility planners and infrastructure managers
  • Development finance and donor-funded project staff
  • Consultants and advisory professionals
  • Researchers and postgraduate students in energy and infrastructure economics

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply systems-thinking principles to appraise energy projects within the broader energy system, capturing interactions that affect technical performance, costs, and risks.
  • Use internationally recognized assessment tools to evaluate the feasibility, bankability, and system-level value of energy technology projects.
  • Conduct detailed techno-economic assessments to estimate capital requirements, operating costs, and financial returns of energy projects.
  • Apply cost–benefit analysis methods to compare alternative project options and support transparent investment decisions.
  • Integrate environmental and lifecycle assessment techniques into project appraisal to quantify emissions, resource use, and sustainability impacts.
  • Assess how grid constraints, demand patterns, and system integration challenges influence project performance and viability.
  • Evaluate project risks, including technical, financial, regulatory, and climate-related risks, using structured assessment frameworks.
  • Analyze the influence of policy, regulation, and market design on project revenues, incentives, and long-term stability.
  • Appraise emerging energy technology projects based on technology readiness, integration complexity, and scalability potential.
  • Develop and assess project scenarios to test sensitivity to changes in demand, costs, policy, and technology assumptions.
  • Interpret and communicate appraisal results effectively to investors, lenders, regulators, and decision-makers.
  • Apply lessons from real-world case studies to improve project appraisal quality and investment outcomes.
