Course Introduction
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions form the foundation of life-saving humanitarian response, particularly in emergencies where water systems collapse, sanitation deteriorates, and disease outbreaks become a critical threat. This course provides an in-depth exploration of how to design robust, context-appropriate emergency WASH programs that are both rapid and high-quality, ensuring affected populations receive essential services when they need them most. With increasing climate-related disasters, protracted conflicts, and displacement crises, the need for technically sound and evidence-based WASH programming continues to grow.
Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of emergency WASH needs assessments, which are vital for identifying gaps, prioritizing interventions, and preventing waterborne diseases. The course examines tools and methodologies used to evaluate water access, sanitation conditions, hygiene behaviors, gender-specific needs, and local capacities, equipping learners with practical field-ready skills. Through real-world case studies and scenario exercises, participants learn how to analyze complex humanitarian environments and design interventions tailored to diverse contexts.
A central focus of the course is quality assurance in emergency WASH programs—a critical yet often overlooked component of humanitarian response. Participants explore standards and indicators that guide WASH programming, including Sphere Standards and UNICEF benchmarks, learning how to strengthen accountability, optimize technical design, and ensure consistent delivery of safe, dignified services. This includes quality monitoring frameworks, risk mitigation strategies, and verification of compliance with international guidelines.
The course also examines the integration of WASH with other sectors, recognizing that health, nutrition, protection, education, and shelter outcomes are directly affected by the availability and quality of water and sanitation infrastructure. Participants learn to design multi-sectoral programs that enhance community resilience and reduce public health risks. Emphasis is placed on inclusive approaches that address the needs of women, children, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
Emerging technologies and innovations in WASH are explored, including solar pumping systems, remote sensing for water safety, and digital monitoring platforms. These tools are transforming how humanitarian actors deliver WASH services in hard-to-reach or insecure locations. The course helps participants understand how to evaluate, adopt, and scale these innovations responsibly and ethically.
By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the technical, managerial, and analytical skills required to design, implement, and oversee high-quality emergency WASH programs. They will be prepared to lead interventions that protect public health, restore dignity, and support resilience in crisis-affected communities.
