Course Introduction

Education in Emergencies (EiE) programmes provide life-saving and life-sustaining support to children, youth, and communities affected by conflict, natural disasters, displacement, epidemics, and other crises. Access to safe, inclusive, and quality education during emergencies protects vulnerable populations, promotes psychosocial wellbeing, and contributes to resilience and recovery. This course equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to effectively design, manage, monitor, and evaluate education programmes in humanitarian and fragile contexts.

The increasing frequency and complexity of humanitarian emergencies have created significant disruptions to education systems worldwide. Millions of learners face barriers to education due to displacement, insecurity, infrastructure destruction, and socioeconomic challenges. Effective programme management is essential to ensure that education interventions are responsive, equitable, accountable, and aligned with international standards. Participants will gain practical insights into managing educational programmes that address urgent learning needs while supporting long-term development objectives.

Education programme managers must coordinate multiple stakeholders, including governments, donors, humanitarian agencies, communities, schools, and implementing partners. This training explores approaches for strengthening collaboration, resource mobilization, strategic planning, and operational coordination in complex emergency environments. Participants will learn how to navigate the unique challenges associated with delivering education services in unstable and rapidly changing contexts.

Monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning are critical components of successful Education in Emergencies programming. This course provides participants with tools and methodologies for assessing needs, measuring outcomes, tracking educational indicators, and utilizing evidence to improve programme effectiveness. Emphasis is placed on ensuring accountability to affected populations while maintaining donor compliance and achieving measurable educational outcomes.

Emerging issues such as digital learning, climate-related displacement, inclusive education, mental health and psychosocial support, localization, protection integration, and resilience-building are transforming Education in Emergencies programming. Participants will examine innovative approaches and emerging best practices that enhance programme quality, sustainability, and responsiveness to evolving humanitarian challenges.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to lead and manage Education in Emergencies programmes that deliver quality learning opportunities, protect vulnerable learners, strengthen education systems, and contribute to recovery and resilience. The training combines international standards, practical case studies, and real-world tools to prepare professionals for effective leadership in humanitarian and emergency education contexts.
