Course Introduction
Edge computing is transforming data processing by moving computation, analytics, storage, and decision-making closer to the devices and physical environments where data is generated. As organizations deploy large numbers of connected devices, sensors, industrial systems, mobile applications, and intelligent machines, centralized processing alone can create challenges involving latency, bandwidth consumption, connectivity, scalability, cost, and operational resilience.
This training course provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and implementing edge data processing and distributed analytics architectures. Participants will learn how data can be collected, filtered, transformed, analyzed, stored, and acted upon at the edge before being transmitted to centralized data centres or cloud platforms. The course emphasizes practical approaches for designing efficient and scalable distributed data environments.
The course examines the relationship between edge devices, gateways, local computing resources, communication networks, cloud platforms, data pipelines, and analytical applications. Participants will explore how distributed architectures can support real-time decision-making while maintaining appropriate coordination between edge environments and centralized systems. Different approaches to edge-cloud collaboration, data synchronization, workload placement, and distributed processing will be addressed.
Particular attention is given to real-time and streaming analytics at the edge. Participants will learn techniques for filtering high-volume telemetry, detecting events, identifying anomalies, aggregating measurements, and running analytical models close to data sources. These capabilities are particularly valuable for industrial automation, smart infrastructure, connected vehicles, healthcare devices, telecommunications, energy systems, and other latency-sensitive applications.
The course also addresses the operational challenges of distributed analytics, including intermittent connectivity, limited computing resources, heterogeneous devices, security risks, data consistency, model deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management. Participants will examine how edge analytics can reduce unnecessary data transmission while maintaining data quality, governance, security, and reliable synchronization with centralized platforms.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and evaluate edge data-processing architectures, develop distributed analytics workflows, and determine when workloads should be processed at the edge, in the cloud, or across both environments. The course also explores emerging developments including edge AI, federated analytics, autonomous edge systems, intelligent gateways, distributed machine learning, 5G-enabled edge computing, and increasingly decentralized data ecosystems.
