Course Introduction

Ecosystem restoration and conservation are essential strategies for reversing environmental degradation, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring long-term ecological balance. This course provides a comprehensive foundation in the science, practice, and policy frameworks that support the restoration of degraded ecosystems across terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal environments.

Human activities such as deforestation, pollution, urban expansion, and unsustainable agriculture have significantly damaged ecosystems worldwide. This course explores the causes and consequences of ecosystem degradation while introducing practical solutions for rehabilitation, conservation, and sustainable management of natural resources.

Participants will gain practical skills in ecosystem assessment, restoration planning, biodiversity conservation techniques, and ecological monitoring. The course emphasizes evidence-based approaches that integrate ecological science with community engagement and sustainable development planning.

Restoring ecosystems is increasingly recognized as a cost-effective solution for climate change mitigation and adaptation. This course highlights how restored ecosystems enhance carbon sequestration, improve water cycles, reduce disaster risks, and support livelihoods for vulnerable communities.

Policy frameworks and international initiatives such as the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration guide global conservation efforts. This course examines how these frameworks translate into national strategies, funding mechanisms, and implementation programs at local levels.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and practical tools to design, implement, and evaluate ecosystem restoration and conservation projects that promote environmental sustainability and resilience.
