Course Introduction

Biodiversity is under unprecedented pressure from human activity, climate change, and land-use transformation. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) has set ambitious targets for conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of biodiversity. Achieving these requires robust monitoring systems that can provide consistent, accurate, and actionable data.

Earth Observation (EO) technologies, including satellite remote sensing, aerial systems, and geospatial analytics, provide essential tools for biodiversity monitoring at multiple scales. They support the measurement of ecosystem integrity, species distribution, land use change, and conservation outcomes aligned with GBF targets.

This course is designed to provide participants with practical skills and theoretical knowledge in applying EO technologies to track, evaluate, and report progress toward global biodiversity commitments. It bridges science, technology, and policy, ensuring that participants are equipped to deliver data-driven insights.

The training explores applications of EO in habitat mapping, restoration tracking, invasive species monitoring, and ecosystem service assessment. Participants will gain hands-on experience with real-world biodiversity datasets and learn to integrate them with decision-making frameworks.

In addition, the course emphasizes the policy dimension, focusing on how geospatial evidence can guide national biodiversity strategies, inform reporting to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and contribute to global conservation databases.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to design and apply EO-based solutions that directly support countries, organizations, and stakeholders in achieving the ambitious GBF targets while promoting sustainable biodiversity governance.
