Course Introduction

Urban areas are at the heart of the global sustainability agenda, driving economic growth, infrastructure development, and climate action. However, financing sustainable urban transitions remains a pressing challenge. Tools such as green bonds and sustainable finance instruments are increasingly relied upon to bridge funding gaps for climate-smart projects.

Earth observation (EO) and GIS technologies play a critical role in providing the evidence base for sustainable urban finance. By delivering accurate data on land use, urban growth, emissions, and ecosystem services, geospatial tools support the measurement, monitoring, and reporting of sustainability-linked financial instruments.

This course equips participants with the technical, financial, and policy skills to integrate EO and GIS into sustainable urban investment planning. It emphasizes the linkage between spatial data, financial risk assessment, and sustainable financing mechanisms such as green bonds.

Participants will explore advanced EO techniques for mapping urban climate risks, monitoring sustainable infrastructure, and verifying environmental benefits. At the same time, they will gain insights into structuring and managing green finance instruments that align with global frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement.

The course combines technical training in GIS and remote sensing with practical sessions on financial innovation, climate finance reporting, and sustainability certification processes. This unique cross-disciplinary approach helps participants bridge the gap between spatial analysis and financial decision-making.

By the end of the program, participants will have the expertise to design and implement data-driven urban finance strategies that enhance resilience, attract investment, and deliver measurable sustainability outcomes.
