Course Introduction

Cooperative institutions operate within communities and markets that may be exposed to natural hazards, technological failures, public emergencies, financial shocks, infrastructure disruptions, and other disasters. Because cooperatives often provide essential financial, agricultural, housing, transport, consumer, energy, and community services, disruption can affect both the organization and the livelihoods of its members. This advanced course provides practical frameworks for identifying disaster risks, strengthening preparedness, coordinating emergency response, and supporting resilient recovery.

The programme develops a comprehensive understanding of disaster risk management across the full disaster cycle: prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery, and adaptation. Participants will learn how to identify hazards, assess exposure and vulnerability, estimate potential impacts, prioritize critical risks, and establish practical preparedness measures. Climate change and environmental pressures are increasing the complexity of disaster risk.
