Course Introduction

The Digital Accessibility Standards for Communication Teams Training Course equips communication, public relations, marketing, media, content, digital, and public engagement professionals with practical knowledge and skills for creating accessible digital communication. The course focuses on how accessibility standards, inclusive design principles, content practices, technology choices, and organizational processes can help ensure that websites, documents, social media, multimedia, email, and other digital communications can be accessed and understood by people with diverse abilities and needs.

Digital communication is most effective when audiences can find, perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with information regardless of disability, device, technology, or communication context. Accessibility barriers can arise through poorly structured headings, inadequate color contrast, missing alternative text, inaccessible documents, captions that are absent or inaccurate, complex navigation, unclear language, poorly labeled forms, and content that does not work effectively with assistive technologies. Participants will learn how to recognize these barriers and incorporate accessibility into everyday communication planning and production.

The training provides a practical understanding of accessibility standards and their application to communication workflows. Participants will explore accessibility principles for websites, PDFs, presentations, email, social media, images, video, audio, forms, documents, and digital campaigns. Rather than treating accessibility as a final technical inspection, the course emphasizes integrating accessibility from the beginning of content planning, creation, editing, review, approval, publication, and maintenance.

Participants will learn how to develop accessible content using clear language, meaningful headings, descriptive links, alternative text, captions, transcripts, accessible tables, appropriate color use, keyboard-friendly structures, logical reading order, and properly labeled interactive elements. The course also examines how communication teams can work effectively with developers, designers, IT specialists, procurement teams, legal advisers, vendors, and accessibility specialists. Participants will learn how to create practical accessibility checklists, review procedures, governance requirements, and accountability mechanisms.

The course also examines accessibility across emerging technologies and communication formats. AI-generated content, automated captioning, generative imagery, personalization, chatbots, voice interfaces, mobile communication, and automated publishing can create both accessibility opportunities and new barriers. Participants will learn how to use these technologies responsibly while checking outputs for accuracy, accessibility, bias, clarity, and usability. Particular attention is given to the limitations of automated accessibility tools and the importance of human testing and user feedback.

The course concludes with accessibility governance, testing, monitoring, and continuous improvement. Participants will develop practical accessibility strategies, content standards, review workflows, audit approaches, and implementation roadmaps for communication teams. They will learn how to embed accessibility into organizational culture rather than treating it as a one-time compliance exercise. By the end of the training, participants will be able to produce more inclusive digital communication, identify accessibility barriers, apply relevant standards, strengthen publishing processes, and improve the experience of audiences with diverse abilities and access needs.
