Course Introduction

Development knowledge and research can generate valuable evidence for improving policies, programmes, services, and community outcomes, but evidence only creates meaningful impact when it is understood, trusted, communicated, and applied by the people who need it. The Development Knowledge Translation and Research Uptake Training Course focuses on bridging the gap between research generation and practical use by strengthening participants’ ability to transform complex evidence into accessible, relevant, and actionable knowledge for decision-makers, practitioners, communities, funders, and other stakeholders.

The course provides a comprehensive understanding of knowledge translation as a strategic process for moving research findings, data, lessons, innovations, and programme evidence into policy, practice, organisational learning, and development action. Participants will explore how to identify research users, understand their information needs, assess evidence readiness, develop compelling knowledge products, select appropriate communication channels, and create engagement pathways that increase the likelihood that research will influence decisions and improve development outcomes.

Participants will examine the complete research uptake cycle, from evidence generation and stakeholder mapping through synthesis, interpretation, communication, dissemination, engagement, application, institutionalisation, and learning. Particular attention is given to translating technical research into policy briefs, evidence summaries, practice guides, decision tools, presentations, infographics, dashboards, case studies, learning products, and other formats that support different audiences. The training also explores how to communicate uncertainty, limitations, conflicting evidence, and research findings responsibly.

The course recognises that research uptake is not simply a dissemination exercise but an interactive process involving relationships, incentives, institutional cultures, political contexts, professional networks, timing, trust, and opportunities for evidence use. Participants will learn how to build researcher-practitioner relationships, engage policymakers early, facilitate evidence dialogues, develop communities of practice, strengthen organisational learning, and create feedback mechanisms through which users can influence research priorities and knowledge products.

The training addresses emerging developments affecting knowledge translation, including artificial intelligence, open science, data visualisation, digital knowledge platforms, automated evidence synthesis, research integrity, misinformation, disinformation, reproducibility concerns, rapid evidence needs, and increasingly complex policy environments. Participants will explore responsible uses of emerging technologies while considering ethical communication, source credibility, intellectual property, data protection, accessibility, equity, and the risks of oversimplifying or misrepresenting research evidence.
