Course Introduction
The Deferred Tax Accounting and Audit Training Course provides a practical and structured approach to understanding, preparing, reviewing, and auditing deferred tax balances and related financial statement disclosures. The course is designed for external auditors, internal auditors, accountants, tax professionals, finance managers, financial reporting specialists, and assurance practitioners who need to evaluate the accounting and audit implications of deferred tax.
The program examines the relationship between accounting carrying amounts and tax bases and develops practical techniques for identifying temporary differences and determining the resulting deferred tax assets and liabilities. Participants will explore differences arising from property, plant and equipment, intangible assets, provisions, leases, financial instruments, investments, employee benefits, accruals, business combinations, and other accounting and tax treatments.
Particular emphasis is placed on the recognition and measurement of deferred tax assets and liabilities and the judgments involved in assessing their recoverability. Participants will evaluate taxable temporary differences, deductible temporary differences, unused tax losses, unused tax credits, future taxable profits, tax planning opportunities, and other evidence used to support recognition decisions. The course highlights areas where optimistic forecasts or incomplete tax analysis can create material financial reporting risks.
The course also addresses the practical reconciliation of tax computations to accounting records and financial statements. Participants will learn how to test tax bases, temporary-difference schedules, tax rates, tax calculations, current and deferred tax movements, tax expense reconciliations, and supporting documentation. Audit procedures are designed around completeness, accuracy, valuation, classification, presentation, and disclosure assertions.
Fraud, compliance, and estimation risks are integrated throughout the program. Participants will examine risks associated with unsupported deferred tax assets, inappropriate tax rates, omitted temporary differences, incorrect treatment of business combinations, unrecognized tax consequences, tax losses, changes in tax legislation, and management bias in forecasts of future taxable income. Data analytics can also be applied to identify unusual movements and inconsistencies across accounting and tax records.
The course incorporates technology-enabled tax accounting and auditing, including ERP systems, tax provision software, automated deferred tax calculations, data interfaces, analytics, model controls, and digital documentation. Practical case studies enable participants to prepare temporary-difference schedules, calculate deferred tax, test management estimates, reconcile balances, investigate exceptions, assess disclosures, and prepare well-supported audit conclusions and recommendations.
