Course Introduction

Deepfakes are creating a new category of reputational and communication risk for public relations teams, enabling realistic but fabricated video, audio and imagery to be produced and distributed at increasing speed. This course examines how PR professionals can prepare organisations for deepfake incidents, establish rapid verification procedures and communicate decisively when manipulated media threatens executive credibility, organisational reputation, public trust or stakeholder confidence.

The programme explores the evolving deepfake threat across corporate communications, public affairs, media relations, executive communications and crisis management. Participants will examine how synthetic media can imitate executives, employees, public figures, institutional representatives and trusted communication channels, while considering how manipulated material can spread through social networks, messaging platforms, online communities, news environments and AI-powered discovery systems before conventional verification processes have been completed.

Participants will develop practical capabilities for preparing deepfake crisis response frameworks before incidents occur. The course covers threat assessment, scenario planning, detection indicators, source verification, chain-of-custody considerations, escalation protocols, crisis teams, spokesperson preparation, holding statements and stakeholder communication. AI-assisted monitoring and analytical tools will also be explored to help PR teams identify suspicious content, assess potential reach and prioritise response actions under severe time pressure.

A central emphasis is placed on avoiding premature conclusions. Deepfake incidents can create pressure to respond immediately, yet inaccurate accusations, poorly verified denials or excessive amplification can intensify reputational damage. Participants will learn how to establish evidence-based verification processes, distinguish confirmed facts from uncertainty, coordinate with technical and legal specialists and communicate responsibly while investigations remain underway.

The programme also addresses the wider information environment surrounding synthetic media, including misinformation, disinformation, impersonation, voice cloning, fabricated statements, synthetic evidence, automated amplification and AI-generated narratives. Participants will examine how legitimate content can be manipulated or taken out of context, how false material can gain credibility through repetition and how AI-powered search systems may subsequently reproduce or summarise inaccurate claims.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to build a comprehensive deepfake crisis preparedness and response capability for their organisation. They will be equipped to identify vulnerabilities, develop realistic scenarios, establish verification and escalation procedures, prepare crisis messaging, coordinate internal and external stakeholders, monitor information spread and evaluate response effectiveness. The course provides a practical framework for protecting trust and maintaining communication control when synthetic media creates an urgent reputational challenge.

  • Build post-incident evaluation frameworks that strengthen organisational resilience, communication preparedness and stakeholder confidence after synthetic-media crises.

Comprehensive Course Outline

Module 1: Understanding the Deepfake Crisis Landscape

  • Examining deepfake technology, synthetic video, voice cloning, manipulated imagery and other forms of AI-enabled impersonation.

  • Understanding why synthetic media can create unusually fast-moving reputational, political, operational and stakeholder communication challenges.

  • Assessing how deepfakes can target executives, employees, brands, institutions, spokespeople and trusted organisational communication channels.

  • Mapping the modern distribution environment across social platforms, messaging networks, news media, online communities and AI-powered discovery.

Module 2: Deepfake Threat Assessment and Organisational Vulnerability

  • Identifying executive, employee, brand and institutional assets that could be exploited in synthetic-media attacks or impersonation campaigns.

  • Assessing existing digital footprints, publicly available imagery, recordings, speeches and communications that may increase impersonation exposure.

  • Developing threat matrices that evaluate likelihood, potential impact, stakeholder sensitivity, speed of spread and reputational consequences.

  • Prioritising vulnerabilities according to organisational importance and establishing practical preparedness measures before incidents occur.

Module 3: Detection, Verification and Evidence Assessment

  • Understanding common indicators associated with manipulated video, cloned audio, synthetic imagery and fabricated digital communications.

  • Developing verification workflows that combine technical analysis, source investigation, contextual checking and trusted internal information.

  • Establishing evidence-handling procedures that preserve relevant material and support collaboration with technical, legal and investigative specialists.

  • Managing uncertainty responsibly when verification is incomplete and avoiding premature public conclusions about suspected synthetic media.

Module 4: Crisis Preparedness, Scenario Planning and Simulation

  • Building realistic deepfake crisis scenarios involving executive impersonation, fabricated announcements, manipulated interviews and false emergency statements.

  • Developing crisis playbooks covering detection, escalation, decision-making, spokesperson activation, stakeholder notification and public response.

  • Conducting tabletop exercises that test communication speed, verification procedures, internal coordination and leadership decision-making under pressure.

  • Establishing clear triggers for activating crisis teams and escalating incidents according to severity, reach, credibility and potential harm.

Module 5: Crisis Messaging and Public Response

  • Developing holding statements that communicate what is known, what remains under investigation and what stakeholders should do next.

  • Designing rapid-response messages that correct false information without unnecessarily reproducing or amplifying harmful deepfake material.

  • Preparing executive, employee, customer, media, partner and public-sector communications appropriate to different crisis scenarios.

  • Balancing speed, transparency, empathy, evidence and authority when responding to rapidly spreading synthetic-media incidents.

Module 6: AI-Assisted Monitoring and Crisis Intelligence

  • Applying AI-assisted monitoring to identify emerging deepfake incidents, unusual content patterns, impersonation signals and rapidly spreading narratives.

  • Using natural language processing and automated classification to assess online discussion, sentiment, themes and stakeholder reactions.

  • Exploring AI agents and automated workflows for alerting communication teams when potentially damaging synthetic content appears.

  • Maintaining human validation of AI-generated alerts and assessments to prevent false positives, inaccurate conclusions and inappropriate crisis escalation.

Module 7: Misinformation, Disinformation and Information Amplification

  • Understanding how deepfakes interact with misinformation, disinformation, fabricated narratives and coordinated influence activity.

  • Assessing the role of bots, automated accounts, algorithmic amplification and online communities in accelerating synthetic-media distribution.

  • Identifying secondary narratives that emerge when false content is repeatedly discussed, challenged, quoted or incorporated into other information sources.

  • Developing communication strategies that address the wider information environment rather than focusing exclusively on the original manipulated media.

Module 8: Governance, Legal, Ethical and Stakeholder Considerations

  • Establishing governance frameworks that define responsibilities for PR teams, executives, technical specialists, legal advisers and external partners.

  • Addressing privacy, consent, intellectual property, impersonation, evidence handling, disclosure and ethical considerations during deepfake incidents.

  • Developing approval procedures that enable rapid communication while preserving appropriate legal, factual and reputational safeguards.
