Introduction

As cities grow increasingly complex and interconnected, efficient and sustainable urban logistics has become a critical element of modern urban planning. The Data-Driven Urban Logistics Planning Course equips participants with the knowledge and tools to harness data and digital technologies for planning, optimizing, and managing urban freight and delivery systems. This course addresses the pressing challenges of urban congestion, environmental impact, and last-mile delivery inefficiencies by emphasizing evidence-based strategies and real-time decision-making.

Participants will explore the fundamentals of urban logistics systems and learn how data collection, analytics, and visualization can support better policy formulation and operational planning. The course introduces various data sources such as GPS, mobile phone data, smart sensors, traffic monitoring systems, and open data platforms and examines how these are used to understand mobility patterns, freight demand, and infrastructure needs. Emphasis is placed on integrating these insights into the broader urban planning and transport management processes.

With a focus on practical application, the course covers key techniques in spatial analysis, simulation modeling, route optimization, and logistics performance monitoring. Learners will gain hands-on experience using tools such as GIS, transport modeling software, and data dashboards. In addition, the course introduces current innovations in urban freight systems, including delivery drones, electric vehicle routing, microhubs, and digital twin technology, highlighting the role of data in evaluating and scaling such innovations.

This course is designed for urban planners, transport engineers, logistics professionals, data analysts, policymakers, and researchers who aim to improve urban freight operations and sustainability. By combining technical training with real-world case studies from global cities, the course fosters a multidisciplinary perspective essential for successful logistics planning in dynamic urban environments.

Upon completion, participants will be able to design and implement data-driven logistics strategies that enhance urban efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, and support economic activity. Whether working in public administration, private logistics operations, consulting, or academic research, learners will be well-prepared to lead in the evolving field of smart, data-enabled urban logistics planning.
