Course Introduction

Non-governmental organizations are increasingly dependent on digital systems, cloud platforms, mobile data tools, and online communication channels to deliver humanitarian and development programmes. While these technologies improve efficiency and reach, they also expose NGOs to significant cybersecurity threats and information risks. The Cybersecurity and Information Risk Management for NGOs Training Course is designed to equip professionals with practical skills to identify, assess, and manage cyber risks while safeguarding sensitive organizational and beneficiary data.

As cyberattacks continue to rise globally, NGOs have become attractive targets due to limited security infrastructure, high-value data, and decentralized operations. Threats such as phishing, ransomware, data breaches, identity theft, and system disruptions can severely affect programme continuity, donor confidence, and beneficiary safety. This course provides participants with a structured understanding of cyber risk environments and practical mitigation strategies tailored specifically to NGO operations.

The programme explores foundational principles of cybersecurity, including risk assessment, threat modeling, information security governance, access control systems, data protection strategies, and incident response planning. Participants will learn how to develop and implement organizational cybersecurity frameworks that align with international standards while remaining practical for resource-constrained environments common in the NGO sector.

Special focus is placed on information risk management across programme cycles, including data collection, storage, transmission, and reporting systems. Participants will gain skills in securing digital platforms used for beneficiary management, financial systems, communication tools, and remote work environments. The training emphasizes proactive risk identification and prevention rather than reactive response alone.

The course also addresses emerging cybersecurity challenges affecting NGOs, including artificial intelligence-enabled cyber threats, cloud security vulnerabilities, mobile data risks, social engineering attacks, misinformation campaigns, and remote workforce security challenges. Participants will explore how evolving technologies reshape risk landscapes and how organizations can adapt to maintain resilience and operational continuity.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to design and implement cybersecurity frameworks, manage information risks effectively, respond to cyber incidents, and strengthen organizational resilience while protecting sensitive data, systems, and stakeholders.
