Course Introduction

Cultural heritage embodies the history, identity, and collective memory of societies. However, these irreplaceable assets ranging from historic monuments and archaeological sites to museums, libraries, and intangible traditions are increasingly threatened by natural disasters, climate change, armed conflict, urbanization, and neglect. Protecting heritage against hazards has become a global priority for resilience and sustainable development.

The Cultural Heritage Disaster Risk Course is designed to provide professionals with the knowledge, skills, and tools required to safeguard cultural assets from multiple risks. It integrates disaster risk reduction principles with cultural heritage management to build a holistic framework for prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.

Participants will examine international frameworks such as the UNESCO conventions, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and sustainable development goals, which highlight cultural heritage as a key element of resilient and inclusive societies. Through these, learners will gain insights into global best practices and policy trends in heritage protection.

The course emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, bringing together heritage specialists, disaster managers, policymakers, engineers, conservationists, and communities. By fostering collaboration, it demonstrates how heritage protection can serve as a bridge between science, governance, and local traditions.

Case studies from around the world will illustrate both challenges and successful strategies in heritage disaster risk management, including responses to earthquakes, floods, fires, and human-made hazards. These examples highlight how innovative technologies and community participation can complement traditional conservation practices.

Ultimately, this course seeks to empower participants to design and implement effective strategies that safeguard cultural heritage. Beyond preserving artifacts and sites, it emphasizes protecting the values, identities, and knowledge systems embedded in heritage, ensuring they continue to inspire and serve future generations.
