Course Introduction

Cyber extortion incidents create an unusually demanding crisis environment because technical disruption, potential data exposure, financial pressure, legal considerations, stakeholder anxiety, and reputational consequences can develop simultaneously. Communication teams must often operate with incomplete information while technical specialists investigate the incident, leadership evaluates business consequences, and external stakeholders demand immediate clarity about what has happened and what is being done.

This course equips PR, corporate affairs, crisis communication, cybersecurity, risk, and executive advisory professionals with practical frameworks for communicating during cyber extortion incidents. It examines ransomware attacks, data extortion, double-extortion scenarios, threats to publish stolen information, service disruption, compromised systems, customer notification challenges, and other cyber incidents where attackers seek financial or strategic leverage.

These technologies can accelerate situational awareness and communication workflows, but the programme emphasises human validation, confidentiality, privacy, source provenance, hallucination prevention, accountability, and careful control over sensitive information.

Particular attention is given to the information environment surrounding cyber extortion. Threat-actor claims, leaked material, fake disclosures, impersonation, misinformation, disinformation, manipulated screenshots, synthetic media, and rapidly spreading online narratives can complicate incident management.
