Course Introduction

Crisis anticipation and scenario planning are essential capabilities for humanitarian, development, and security actors operating in volatile and uncertain environments. This course provides a structured approach to understanding how future crises can be anticipated through systematic analysis, foresight tools, and risk intelligence.

The program explores methodologies for identifying early warning signals, analyzing drivers of change, and mapping potential crisis trajectories. Participants will learn how to translate complex data into actionable scenarios that support proactive decision-making and preparedness planning.

A strong emphasis is placed on scenario development techniques, including best-case, worst-case, and most-likely scenarios. Participants will understand how to build narratives around uncertainty and use them to guide strategic planning and resource allocation.

The course also examines the integration of quantitative and qualitative data sources, including conflict analysis, climate projections, socio-economic trends, and political risk indicators. These inputs are essential for robust crisis anticipation frameworks.

Participants will engage in practical exercises that simulate real-world crisis environments, enabling them to apply scenario planning tools in humanitarian response, disaster risk reduction, and organizational resilience planning.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the skills to anticipate crises, develop strategic scenarios, and support proactive interventions that reduce impact and improve preparedness in high-risk contexts.
