Course Introduction

Counterparty credit risk is a critical financial risk arising when a counterparty may fail to meet its contractual obligations on financial transactions, derivatives, securities financing, lending, or other exposures. This course provides an audit-focused framework for evaluating counterparty credit risk governance, measurement, monitoring, mitigation, reporting, and control effectiveness across complex financial institutions and corporate treasury environments.

The course examines the complete counterparty credit risk lifecycle, beginning with onboarding, due diligence, credit assessment, rating, approval, and limit setting, and continuing through transaction execution, exposure measurement, collateral management, netting, monitoring, escalation, and remediation. Participants will learn how auditors can evaluate whether counterparty exposures are accurately identified, measured, controlled, and reported throughout the relationship lifecycle.

Particular emphasis is placed on current exposure, potential future exposure, credit valuation considerations, netting arrangements, collateral, margining, guarantees, credit risk mitigation, concentration risk, and wrong-way risk. Participants will examine how assumptions, models, data quality, market movements, contractual terms, and management judgment can influence counterparty exposure measurements and risk decisions.

The course also addresses governance and control structures surrounding counterparty credit risk, including credit policies, risk appetite, delegated authorities, approval limits, independent risk oversight, exception management, watchlists, escalation procedures, and portfolio reporting. Participants will develop practical approaches for testing whether counterparty risk controls are appropriately designed, independently monitored, consistently applied, and supported by sufficient evidence.

Modern counterparty risk management increasingly depends on automated credit scoring, exposure engines, collateral platforms, netting systems, market data, analytics, artificial intelligence, and integrated risk technology. The course therefore covers technology risks, data governance, model risk, system interfaces, cybersecurity, automated limit controls, continuous monitoring, and resilience considerations affecting counterparty credit risk assurance.

Through practical audit scenarios, transaction testing, portfolio analysis, control evaluations, and an integrated case study, participants will develop the ability to identify counterparty credit risk weaknesses, challenge risk measurements and assumptions, assess mitigation effectiveness, document audit evidence, and communicate findings. The course is designed to strengthen professional skepticism and support effective assurance over counterparty credit risk management.
