Course Introduction

Construction projects require disciplined project controls to maintain visibility over scope, cost, schedule, resources, quality, procurement, contracts, risks, and physical progress. Without reliable controls, even technically sound projects can experience cost overruns, schedule delays, productivity losses, uncontrolled changes, claims, and weakened decision-making. Effective controls provide management with timely information to identify problems early and take corrective action.

This course provides a comprehensive framework for establishing and managing construction project controls throughout the project lifecycle. It covers the development of project baselines, work breakdown structures, budgets, schedules, progress measurement systems, cost-control processes, forecasting techniques, risk registers, change management, reporting frameworks, and performance indicators needed to manage construction delivery effectively.

Participants will develop practical skills in construction planning and scheduling, including activity definition, sequencing, resource loading, critical-path analysis, baseline management, progress updates, delay analysis, recovery planning, and schedule forecasting. The course also examines how construction progress can be measured objectively using quantities, milestones, weighted progress, earned value, productivity indicators, and field-based reporting systems.

Cost and commercial control are central components of the programme. Participants will learn how to establish cost structures, monitor commitments and expenditure, manage contingencies, forecast final costs, analyse trends, control variations, assess claims, and integrate contract information into project reporting. The course connects financial performance with physical progress so that project teams can identify emerging cost pressures and commercial exposure.

Modern construction project controls increasingly depend on digital technologies, integrated information systems, Building Information Modelling, mobile field applications, automated progress measurement, artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, drones, digital twins, and real-time dashboards. The course examines how these tools can improve data quality, reporting speed, forecasting, coordination, and management visibility while addressing challenges involving cybersecurity, data governance, and information reliability.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to establish effective construction project control systems, develop and maintain reliable cost and schedule baselines, measure progress, forecast outcomes, manage changes and risks, analyse performance, and provide decision-ready information to project stakeholders. The programme is designed to improve predictability, accountability, productivity, cost discipline, schedule performance, and successful construction delivery.
