Course Introduction

Computer-assisted interviewing has become a central component of modern survey research, enabling organizations to collect structured, timely, and increasingly complex data through digital interviewing platforms. This course equips participants with the methodological, operational, and technical knowledge required to design, implement, supervise, and quality-assure computer-assisted survey operations across different modes and field environments.

The course examines the principles and applications of Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI), Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI), Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI), and related digital data-collection approaches. Participants explore questionnaire programming, interviewer workflows, automated routing, validation rules, digital consent, multimedia content, respondent management, and synchronization processes while considering how technology affects measurement, respondent experience, interviewer performance, and data quality.

A major emphasis is placed on translating research instruments into robust digital questionnaires and operational workflows. Participants learn how to implement skip patterns, branching logic, calculated fields, range and consistency checks, randomized elements, repeat groups, dynamic prompts, required responses, and other controls that reduce avoidable errors while supporting efficient fieldwork. The course also addresses device configuration, connectivity constraints, offline interviewing, synchronization, version control, and troubleshooting in distributed survey operations.

Participants will also develop practical approaches for managing digital field teams, interviewer training, assignment allocation, call scheduling, monitoring, productivity tracking, paradata, quality indicators, and corrective interventions. Attention is given to identifying unusual interviewing patterns, excessive interview durations, high item nonresponse, inconsistent responses, location anomalies, duplicate records, and other signals that may require investigation without automatically treating operational anomalies as evidence of misconduct.

The course integrates data protection, research ethics, respondent confidentiality, informed consent, access control, secure device management, authentication, encryption, audit trails, and responsible handling of personally identifiable information. Participants consider how digital survey systems can strengthen quality and accountability while introducing new risks related to cybersecurity, device loss, unauthorized access, automated decision rules, data transmission, third-party platforms, and cross-border data processing.

Emerging developments are incorporated throughout the programme, including cloud-based survey operations, remote interviewing, adaptive questionnaires, real-time fieldwork dashboards, digital identity and authentication approaches, geospatial and paradata monitoring, AI-assisted questionnaire development, automated quality checks, and increasingly decentralized data-collection models. By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to plan and manage technology-enabled survey operations that are methodologically sound, operationally efficient, ethically responsible, and capable of producing reliable research data.
