Course Introduction

Local economic development (LED) is a powerful approach for fostering sustainable community growth, reducing poverty, and creating inclusive economic opportunities. This course provides advanced knowledge and practical skills on how community development practitioners can design and implement local economic strategies that strengthen livelihoods and stimulate economic transformation at the local level.

The program explores the principles and frameworks of local economic development, focusing on how communities can leverage their local resources, institutions, and partnerships to drive economic growth. Participants will learn how to identify economic opportunities within communities and translate them into sustainable development initiatives that benefit local populations.

A key focus of the course is the integration of community participation in economic planning processes. Participants will gain skills in engaging local stakeholders, including businesses, cooperatives, government agencies, and civil society organizations, to collaboratively design and implement inclusive economic development strategies that reflect local priorities.

The course also examines value chain development and enterprise support systems as critical components of local economic development. Participants will explore how to strengthen local markets, support small and medium enterprises, and enhance productivity in key economic sectors that drive community prosperity.

Another important aspect of the program is infrastructure and investment planning for local development. Participants will learn how to assess infrastructure needs, attract investment, and design enabling environments that support economic growth and job creation in communities.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement local economic development strategies that promote inclusive growth, reduce poverty, and strengthen community resilience. They will gain the capacity to transform local resources into sustainable economic opportunities.
