Course Introduction

Community Development Approaches for Informal Settlements focuses on addressing the complex social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by populations living in informal urban areas. The course equips participants with practical tools to design inclusive, sustainable, and people-centered interventions that improve living conditions in informal settlements.

The training explores the dynamics of rapid urbanization and the growth of informal settlements, including issues such as inadequate housing, poor infrastructure, limited access to services, and tenure insecurity. Participants will learn how to analyze these challenges and develop context-specific community development responses.

A strong emphasis is placed on participatory planning and community engagement, ensuring that residents of informal settlements are actively involved in decision-making processes. The course highlights how inclusive approaches lead to more sustainable and acceptable development outcomes.

Participants will also examine integrated urban development strategies, including slum upgrading, basic service delivery, housing improvement, and livelihood support. These interventions are essential for improving quality of life and reducing urban inequality.

The course integrates emerging urban development trends such as climate resilience in informal settlements, urban poverty reduction strategies, and smart city inclusion frameworks. Participants will explore how innovation can be applied to improve service delivery in marginalized urban areas.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement community-driven development interventions that improve living conditions, enhance resilience, and promote inclusive urban transformation in informal settlements.
