Course Introduction

Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) is an inclusive approach that empowers local communities to sustainably manage and benefit from natural resources such as forests, water, wildlife, and land. This course provides a comprehensive foundation in participatory resource governance systems.

The program explores how decentralization and community participation improve conservation outcomes while enhancing livelihoods and resilience. Participants will learn how shared governance structures can balance ecological sustainability with socio-economic development needs.

A key focus is placed on institutional frameworks, community rights, and benefit-sharing mechanisms that support effective resource management. The course highlights how communities can become active stewards of natural ecosystems through empowerment and capacity building.

Participants will also examine successful CBNRM models from around the world, including community forestry, wildlife conservancies, watershed committees, and pastoral resource management systems. These case studies provide practical insights into implementation.

The course further addresses challenges such as resource conflicts, governance failures, tenure insecurity, and unequal benefit distribution. It also explores how policy and legal frameworks can strengthen community-based conservation systems.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to design, implement, and evaluate community-based natural resource management programs that promote sustainability, equity, and long-term ecosystem health.
