Course Introduction

Community-based forest management and participatory land use planning have emerged as essential approaches for achieving sustainable natural resource management while ensuring social inclusion and local ownership. This course provides a comprehensive framework for integrating community participation into forest governance and land use planning processes.

With increasing pressures on forest resources from deforestation, climate change, and competing land uses, centralized management approaches alone are no longer sufficient. This training equips participants with practical tools to engage communities, strengthen local institutions, and promote collaborative decision-making in forest and land management.

The course explores participatory methodologies that empower communities to take an active role in planning, implementing, and monitoring natural resource management initiatives. Participants will learn how to incorporate indigenous knowledge, local priorities, and traditional practices into modern planning frameworks.

Participants will also examine the socio-economic dimensions of community-based management, including livelihoods, gender inclusion, and equitable benefit-sharing. The program emphasizes balancing conservation objectives with community development and economic sustainability.

Emerging topics such as climate-smart community forestry, digital participatory mapping, and nature-based solutions are integrated into the course. Participants will learn how to use innovative tools and approaches to enhance transparency, accountability, and effectiveness in participatory planning.

By the end of the training, participants will be equipped with the skills to design and implement community-based forest management and participatory land use plans. The course aims to strengthen inclusive governance systems and promote sustainable resource management practices.
