Course Introduction
Effective communication is fundamental to successful gender equality programme implementation because policies and interventions require understanding, participation, behavioural change, institutional commitment, and sustained community support. Strategic communication helps organisations explain gender equality objectives, challenge harmful norms, engage diverse stakeholders, address resistance, and create environments where women, girls, men, boys, and gender-diverse communities can participate meaningfully in social and economic development.
The Communication for Gender Equality Programme Implementation Training Course equips participants with practical strategies for planning, implementing, and evaluating communication interventions that advance gender equality. The course explores strategic communication, gender-transformative communication, social and behaviour change, stakeholder engagement, advocacy, community dialogue, media relations, digital communication, and approaches for communicating sensitive gender issues in ethical, inclusive, culturally responsive, and conflict-sensitive ways.
Participants will examine communication requirements across programmes addressing women's empowerment, gender-based discrimination, education, health, economic participation, leadership, political representation, access to resources, social protection, workplace equality, and institutional reform. Emphasis is placed on developing messages that recognise different lived experiences and avoid reinforcing stereotypes while clearly communicating programme objectives, rights, opportunities, responsibilities, and pathways for participation.
The training places particular attention on transforming harmful social norms and behaviours through communication. Participants will explore how gender attitudes are shaped by families, communities, institutions, media, social networks, culture, and wider social structures. They will learn how to use participatory communication, positive role models, community dialogue, interpersonal engagement, storytelling, and social and behaviour change approaches to encourage more equitable attitudes, relationships, opportunities, and practices.
Participants will also examine emerging communication challenges affecting gender equality programmes, including online harassment, gendered misinformation, digital exclusion, algorithmic bias, artificial intelligence-generated content, harmful stereotypes, polarisation, backlash against gender equality initiatives, and unequal access to communication technologies. The course provides practical approaches for identifying communication risks, managing sensitive conversations, strengthening digital safety, and ensuring that programme communication does not unintentionally reinforce discrimination or exclusion.
By completing the training, participants will be better prepared to design and implement communication strategies that contribute to measurable gender equality outcomes. They will gain practical tools for stakeholder engagement, advocacy, behaviour change, community mobilisation, media relations, digital communication, risk management, and monitoring and evaluation, enabling them to communicate gender equality programmes more effectively and support lasting institutional, community, and behavioural transformation.
