Course Introduction
Climate adaptation increasingly depends on the ability of institutions, communities, development organizations, and local leaders to communicate risks clearly and support informed action. Effective communication can help people understand changing hazards, evaluate adaptation options, access available services, and participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their livelihoods, infrastructure, health, and long-term resilience.
The Communication for Climate Adaptation and Community Resilience Training Course provides a comprehensive framework for designing communication strategies that strengthen climate preparedness, adaptive capacity, social cohesion, and community resilience. Participants will explore climate risk communication, stakeholder engagement, behavioural change, community information systems, inclusive communication, local knowledge, early warning, and participatory adaptation planning.
Climate risks vary significantly across locations, populations, economic sectors, and social groups. Communication strategies therefore need to account for differences in exposure, vulnerability, capacity, language, culture, access to information, trust, and institutional relationships. Participants will learn how to segment audiences, identify information needs, translate technical climate evidence into accessible messages, and develop communication approaches that support practical adaptation decisions.
The programme emphasizes two-way communication rather than one-directional information dissemination. Communities need opportunities to express concerns, contribute local knowledge, challenge assumptions, report emerging risks, and influence adaptation priorities. Participants will examine community engagement methods, participatory communication, trusted messenger approaches, feedback mechanisms, social listening, misinformation management, and communication channels suitable for different population groups.
The course also examines emerging issues shaping climate resilience communication, including climate misinformation and polarization, extreme weather communication, anticipatory action, digital platforms, artificial intelligence, geospatial information, early warning systems, climate migration, loss and damage, nature-based solutions, and locally led adaptation. Participants will consider how to communicate uncertainty responsibly while maintaining credibility, urgency, inclusion, and public confidence.
By completing the Communication for Climate Adaptation and Community Resilience Training Course, participants will be better equipped to design and manage communication programmes that convert climate information into meaningful action.
