Course Introduction
The CommCare for Community Programme Monitoring Training Course is a practical professional development programme designed to strengthen the capacity of programme teams to collect, manage, analyse, and use community-level monitoring data. The course introduces participants to CommCare as a digital platform for mobile data collection, beneficiary registration, case management, and field activity monitoring. Participants learn how to translate programme objectives, monitoring frameworks, service delivery procedures, and community engagement activities into structured digital workflows that improve information availability and support evidence-based programme decisions.
The training emphasises the design and implementation of community monitoring applications that capture information about households, individuals, community groups, facilities, outreach activities, and service delivery events. Participants explore how to develop digital forms, configure questions and validation rules, apply skip logic, and organise data fields around programme indicators. Practical exercises demonstrate how to create applications that are suitable for frontline workers, reduce avoidable recording errors, and support consistent monitoring across villages, wards, districts, project sites, and implementing partners.
A central component of the course is beneficiary and case management. Participants learn how to register beneficiaries, assign unique identifiers, maintain case records, document service encounters, and record subsequent follow-up visits. The course explains how registration and follow-up forms can be linked to maintain longitudinal records, helping programme teams understand whether planned services have been delivered and whether outstanding actions require attention. Participants also examine how case lists, case properties, referrals, and case closure procedures can support structured monitoring of community interventions and service delivery commitments.
The course also develops participants' ability to supervise field implementation and monitor the performance of community workers. Participants explore user accounts, worker groups, activity reports, submission monitoring, and practical supervisory routines for identifying missed visits, incomplete records, unusual activity patterns, and follow-up delays. The training encourages supervisors to interpret digital monitoring information alongside field realities, community feedback, and staff explanations rather than relying solely on numerical performance measures. This approach supports constructive supervision, timely problem-solving, and continuous improvement in programme delivery.
Data quality assurance and reporting form another important part of the programme. Participants learn to apply validation rules, review submitted forms, identify missing or inconsistent information, document corrections, and export data for further analysis. The course introduces practical approaches to organising monitoring indicators, disaggregating results by relevant population groups or implementation locations, and preparing reports on service coverage, beneficiary follow-up, field activities, and programme outputs. Participants also consider data protection, informed consent, confidentiality, appropriate user permissions, and responsible management of sensitive community information.
By the end of the five-day training, participants will have practised designing and testing a CommCare application for a realistic community programme monitoring scenario. They will be better equipped to establish digital monitoring workflows, support frontline workers, review programme data, and communicate findings to programme managers and other stakeholders. The course is relevant to community health, livelihoods, agriculture, education, nutrition, water and sanitation, social protection, humanitarian response, and other development programmes that require reliable beneficiary-level information and consistent monitoring of activities and results.
