Course Introduction

Combined assurance provides a structured approach for coordinating the activities of internal audit, risk management, compliance, finance, external audit, information security, quality assurance, and other assurance providers so that significant organisational risks receive appropriate and proportionate coverage. This course develops practical capabilities for designing combined assurance frameworks that reduce duplication, identify coverage gaps, improve assurance visibility, and strengthen governance over financial and operational risks.

Financial risk mapping is central to effective assurance because financial exposures rarely exist within a single process or department. Risks may arise from revenue recognition, treasury operations, budgeting, procurement, expenditure, financial reporting, taxation, investments, liquidity, fraud, technology, third parties, and strategic decisions. Participants will learn how to identify interconnected financial risks and map them against processes, controls, risk owners, assurance providers, and organisational objectives.

The programme examines how assurance maps can be developed from the organisation’s risk universe, financial statements, business processes, regulatory obligations, control frameworks, and strategic priorities. Participants will learn to distinguish between management controls, second-line oversight, independent assurance, and external assurance while assessing the nature, frequency, scope, depth, and reliability of coverage. Particular attention is given to identifying situations where multiple assurance activities examine the same risk while other material risks receive insufficient attention.

A major component of the course is the evaluation of assurance effectiveness. Participants will explore methods for assessing whether assurance activities are appropriately designed, sufficiently independent, evidence-based, timely, and capable of addressing the underlying financial risk. The programme also addresses assurance reliance, information sharing, assurance ratings, control testing, issue escalation, management action tracking, and the use of assurance results to support audit planning and governance decision-making.

Modern financial environments introduce additional complexity through digital payments, cloud-based finance systems, artificial intelligence, automated controls, fintech relationships, outsourcing, cyber threats, data dependencies, sustainability considerations, geopolitical disruption, and increasingly interconnected supply chains. The course incorporates these emerging risks into financial risk mapping and combined assurance design, enabling participants to develop dynamic assurance models rather than relying solely on static annual assurance plans.

By completing this course, participants will be able to construct practical financial risk and assurance maps, analyse coverage across multiple assurance providers, identify gaps and overlaps, strengthen coordination mechanisms, and support senior management and audit committees with clearer assurance information. The programme combines conceptual frameworks with practical mapping exercises, case studies, risk scenarios, assurance matrices, financial process analysis, and governance-focused applications to build immediately usable professional capability.
