Course Introduction

Coastal and marine ecosystems are among the most productive yet vulnerable environmental systems on the planet, facing increasing pressure from pollution, climate change, overfishing, and coastal development. This course provides a comprehensive framework for assessing and protecting marine water quality systems.

Participants will explore the scientific principles governing coastal hydrodynamics, marine ecology, and water quality dynamics, enabling them to understand how pollutants move through and impact marine environments and coastal ecosystems.

The training emphasizes the identification, monitoring, and mitigation of marine pollution sources including oil spills, plastic waste, industrial discharge, agricultural runoff, and untreated sewage affecting coastal waters and biodiversity systems.

A strong focus is placed on marine water quality assessment techniques, including sampling methodologies, laboratory analysis, remote sensing, and GIS applications for coastal zone monitoring and environmental protection systems.

The course also integrates environmental protection strategies such as marine spatial planning, ecosystem-based management, and coastal zone regulation frameworks designed to preserve marine biodiversity and ecosystem services.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design, implement, and evaluate coastal and marine environmental protection programs that support sustainable ocean governance and resilient coastal ecosystems.
