Course Introduction

Climate change, rapid urbanization, and increasing population pressures are transforming the way cities produce, distribute, and consume food. Rising temperatures, water scarcity, extreme weather events, and disruptions in global supply chains have exposed vulnerabilities in traditional food systems and increased the need for resilient local production models. This course provides participants with practical knowledge and strategic approaches for developing climate-smart urban agriculture systems that strengthen food security, improve environmental sustainability, and enhance community resilience in urban and peri-urban environments.

Urban agriculture is increasingly being recognized as an essential component of sustainable city development and climate adaptation strategies. By integrating food production into urban landscapes through rooftop farming, community gardens, hydroponics, vertical farming, and controlled environment agriculture, cities can improve access to fresh food while reducing transportation costs and carbon emissions. Participants will explore innovative urban farming models that support economic development and contribute to resilient and inclusive food systems.

The course provides extensive coverage of climate-smart agricultural practices designed to increase productivity, improve resource efficiency, and strengthen adaptation to climate-related risks. Participants will examine water-efficient irrigation technologies, renewable energy integration, soil health management, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable waste management approaches that enhance agricultural sustainability and long-term resilience within urban food production systems.

Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the relationships between urban agriculture, food systems, and environmental sustainability. Participants will gain practical insight into how climate-smart interventions can improve food availability, reduce vulnerability to supply chain disruptions, promote healthier diets, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities. The program also examines policy frameworks and governance arrangements that support resilient urban food systems.

Emerging technologies including precision agriculture, Internet of Things applications, artificial intelligence, climate analytics, blockchain traceability systems, and digital marketplaces are transforming food production globally. Participants will evaluate how these technologies improve decision-making, optimize resource use, enhance transparency, and support efficient management of climate-smart urban agriculture initiatives and food supply chains.

By the end of the course, participants will possess the expertise required to design and implement climate-smart urban agriculture projects that improve food security, increase resilience, and contribute to sustainable urban development. They will be equipped to lead initiatives that strengthen local economies, create employment opportunities, reduce environmental impacts, and support long-term food system sustainability.
