Introduction

Climate change is reshaping the livelihoods and financial realities of millions, particularly in vulnerable communities that rely on agriculture and informal economies. As environmental risks intensify, microfinance institutions (MFIs) must adapt their operations, products, and strategies to support resilience and sustainability. The Climate-Smart Microfinance Training Course equips participants with the tools and frameworks to integrate climate considerations into financial inclusion practices.

This course explores how MFIs can contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation by designing green financial products that enable clients to manage environmental risks effectively. Participants will learn how to finance climate-resilient livelihoods, such as renewable energy initiatives, sustainable agriculture, and eco-friendly enterprises, while ensuring long-term institutional sustainability.

Climate-smart microfinance goes beyond credit provision, it encompasses risk management, financial literacy, and sustainable innovation. The course delves into methods for assessing climate risks in lending portfolios, evaluating carbon footprints, and leveraging digital technologies to promote environmental accountability. Participants will discover how to align institutional goals with global climate frameworks like the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The training also covers the integration of climate resilience into microfinance operations, governance, and client engagement. It examines how to use financial data and geographic information systems (GIS) to identify risk-prone regions and tailor lending products accordingly. Participants will learn how to engage clients in climate adaptation strategies while maintaining financial performance and inclusion.

Practical sessions and case studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America will highlight how successful MFIs are adopting climate-smart lending models. Emphasis will be placed on partnerships, policy advocacy, and innovative funding mechanisms such as green bonds and climate funds to expand institutional capacity.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design, implement, and evaluate microfinance programs that contribute to both economic empowerment and environmental sustainability, fostering communities that are financially and ecologically resilient.
