Introduction

Climate change is one of the most pressing threats to food security and rural livelihoods worldwide. Increasingly erratic weather, prolonged droughts, floods, and shifting growing conditions challenge the ability of farming households and communities to sustain agricultural productivity. This requires urgent adoption of climate-smart approaches that safeguard livelihoods while ensuring resilience to shocks.

The Climate-Smart Agriculture and Livelihood Diversification Course is designed to build the capacity of practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders to integrate climate-smart practices into rural development strategies. It emphasizes sustainable food production, efficient resource use, and climate adaptation through innovative farming and livelihood systems.

Participants will explore how climate-smart agriculture (CSA) principles can be applied to enhance productivity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting ecosystems. The course integrates scientific knowledge, indigenous practices, and innovative technologies such as precision farming, renewable energy, and digital tools for climate monitoring.

Beyond agriculture, the course examines livelihood diversification strategies that reduce dependency on climate-vulnerable sectors. Participants will engage in case studies, interactive exercises, and scenario planning to understand how households and communities can strengthen resilience by combining farming with alternative income-generating activities.

The program also highlights the role of gender, youth, and social inclusion in climate-smart development. Special attention is given to empowering marginalized groups and ensuring that resilience-building strategies are inclusive and equitable.

By the end of this course, participants will be equipped to design, implement, and evaluate climate-smart and diversified livelihood strategies that foster sustainability, improve food systems, and enhance resilience in rural communities.
