Course Introduction

Climate change is creating unprecedented risks for agriculture, affecting crop yields, water availability, soil health, and market stability. This course equips participants with the skills to map, analyze, and interpret climate risks for more informed agricultural planning and decision-making.

Participants will learn to combine geospatial tools, remote sensing, and climate data with field-level agricultural observations to identify vulnerable areas, prioritize interventions, and optimize resource allocation for climate-resilient farming systems.

The course emphasizes integrating climate risk mapping into farm-level, regional, and national planning processes. Learners will understand how to translate spatial data into actionable strategies for sustainable food production and risk mitigation.

Through case studies and applied exercises, participants will explore risk scenarios, analyze exposure and sensitivity, and evaluate adaptive capacity across different agro-ecological zones, enabling proactive interventions and contingency planning.

The course also covers institutional, policy, and financial mechanisms that support climate-informed agricultural planning. Participants will gain insights on how risk maps can guide investments, disaster preparedness, and policy decisions to enhance resilience.

By the end of the course, learners will be proficient in developing, interpreting, and applying climate risk maps to support agricultural productivity, minimize losses, and ensure sustainable food systems under a changing climate.
