Course Introduction

Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, directly impacting agricultural production and food security. This course equips participants with knowledge and skills to design, implement, and manage climate risk insurance mechanisms that protect farmers and food systems.

Participants will explore the concepts of risk assessment, insurance modeling, and financial instruments tailored to agriculture. The course emphasizes practical approaches to reduce vulnerability, manage uncertainty, and stabilize income for farmers facing climate shocks.

The course examines public, private, and hybrid insurance schemes, highlighting their role in mitigating the economic impacts of droughts, floods, pests, and other climate-related hazards on agricultural production and supply chains.

Through case studies and simulation exercises, learners will analyze policy frameworks, regulatory considerations, and operational strategies that enhance the effectiveness, accessibility, and sustainability of agricultural insurance programs.

Participants will gain skills in stakeholder engagement, including working with governments, private insurers, development organizations, and farming communities, ensuring equitable coverage and responsive risk transfer solutions.

By the end of the course, learners will be capable of developing actionable climate risk insurance strategies, linking risk finance with agricultural resilience, and fostering sustainable food systems under climate variability and uncertainty.
