Course Introduction

Climate change and environmental variability are significantly impacting seed systems worldwide, threatening crop diversity, yield stability, and food security. This course equips participants with knowledge and practical skills to develop climate-resilient seed systems that ensure sustainable food production.

Participants will learn to integrate scientific research, local knowledge, and policy frameworks to strengthen seed production, storage, and distribution systems, ensuring farmers have access to high-quality, climate-adapted seeds.

The course emphasizes assessing risks to seed systems caused by drought, flooding, pests, and disease outbreaks. Participants will explore strategies for mitigating these risks while maintaining genetic diversity and resilience in agricultural landscapes.

Through case studies and field-based exercises, learners will understand community-based approaches to seed conservation, seed banks, and participatory seed system management, fostering local ownership and capacity development.

Participants will also gain insights into regulatory, institutional, and financial mechanisms that support resilient seed systems. Emphasis is placed on policy alignment, governance structures, and investment strategies that enhance national and regional food security.

By the end of the course, participants will have the expertise to design, implement, and monitor climate-resilient seed systems, integrate innovative technologies, and improve seed accessibility for farmers to strengthen long-term food security.
