Course Introduction

Climate resilient infrastructure is becoming a critical requirement in humanitarian programming as disasters linked to climate change increase in frequency and intensity. This course equips participants with the knowledge and tools to design, build, and maintain infrastructure that can withstand climate shocks in fragile and emergency settings.

The program explores the intersection of climate change, disaster risk reduction, and humanitarian infrastructure development. Participants will learn how infrastructure systems such as water supply, shelters, roads, and health facilities can be designed for resilience in high-risk environments.

A strong emphasis is placed on integrating climate risk assessments into infrastructure planning and humanitarian response strategies. The course highlights how anticipatory action and resilient design reduce vulnerability and long-term recovery costs for affected populations.

Participants will also study sustainable construction methods, local materials use, and environmentally responsible engineering practices. These approaches ensure infrastructure is not only functional during emergencies but also sustainable over time in resource-constrained contexts.

The course introduces technical tools such as climate risk mapping, hazard modelling, and resilient engineering standards. These tools help practitioners assess risks and design infrastructure that can withstand floods, droughts, storms, and other climate-related hazards.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement climate-resilient infrastructure solutions that support effective, sustainable, and disaster-ready humanitarian operations.
