Course Introduction

Food storage systems are critical for maintaining food security, yet they are increasingly threatened by climate change, including rising temperatures, humidity fluctuations, and extreme weather events. This course equips participants with skills to design and manage storage solutions that preserve food quality, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance supply chain resilience.

Participants will explore the science behind food deterioration, spoilage, and pest infestations, learning how climate-resilient technologies and practices can extend shelf life while minimizing losses. Emphasis is placed on integrating technical, economic, and environmental considerations into storage solutions.

The course addresses both small-scale and large-scale storage operations, including cold storage, silos, warehouses, and integrated post-harvest facilities. Participants will understand how to implement monitoring systems, control temperature and humidity, and optimize storage infrastructure under climate stress.

Through hands-on case studies, learners will examine real-world scenarios where storage systems have been adapted for extreme heat, humidity, and rainfall variability. Strategies for mitigating post-harvest loss and maintaining nutritional quality are emphasized throughout.

The course also explores policy, institutional, and financial mechanisms that support climate-resilient food storage, including investments, insurance, and governance frameworks. Participants will gain skills to make evidence-based recommendations to stakeholders at local, regional, and national levels.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, implement, and manage food storage systems that are climate-resilient, cost-effective, and scalable, ensuring that perishable and non-perishable foods reach markets and communities safely, sustainably, and efficiently.
