Course Introduction

Climate change increasingly threatens local food systems, affecting production, distribution, and community nutrition security. The Climate Resilient Community Food Systems Course equips participants with knowledge and practical skills to design, implement, and manage food systems that withstand climatic shocks while maintaining community access to nutritious food.

This course emphasizes participatory approaches that integrate community knowledge with scientific insights to strengthen resilience. Participants explore strategies for adaptive planning, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable resource management to ensure reliable food availability despite environmental stressors.

Participants will learn to identify vulnerabilities, assess risks, and prioritize interventions across the food value chain. Emphasis is placed on promoting community-led solutions, reducing post-harvest losses, and ensuring equitable food distribution through resilient local systems.

The course incorporates monitoring and evaluation frameworks, enabling participants to track resilience outcomes, measure the impact of interventions, and adjust strategies to evolving climate conditions. Tools for scenario planning and risk assessment are included to guide informed decision-making.

Emerging issues such as urban agriculture, digital mapping of community food networks, local climate adaptation planning, and climate finance mechanisms are integrated to prepare participants for current and future challenges in community food security.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design and manage climate-resilient community food systems, optimize local food production and distribution, and contribute to sustainable, inclusive, and adaptive approaches that safeguard food security in the face of climate change.
