Introduction

Climate change poses an escalating threat to global food systems, particularly in vulnerable communities where agriculture forms the backbone of livelihoods. The Climate Resilience and Food Security Course is designed to equip participants with the essential knowledge and practical tools needed to safeguard food and nutrition security in the face of environmental shocks and stresses. This training explores strategies for strengthening community resilience, enhancing adaptive capacity, and building sustainable agricultural practices that can withstand the increasing frequency of climate-related disruptions.

Participants will gain a deep understanding of the link between climate change, vulnerability, and food insecurity, while also learning how to design and implement resilience-focused interventions. The course emphasizes proactive approaches, including risk assessment, early warning systems, climate-smart agriculture, and integrated resource management.

Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and Goal 13 (Climate Action), this course also reflects the spirit of the first Millennium Development Goal on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. Whether you are a development practitioner, policymaker, researcher, or community leader, this training will empower you to contribute meaningfully to building climate-resilient food systems.

By the end of the course, you will be equipped to support vulnerable populations in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from climate-induced shocks—laying the foundation for long-term food security and sustainable development.

Course Objective

·       Understand the key concepts of climate resilience and their critical role in achieving food and nutrition security.

·       Analyze the impacts of climate change on agriculture, food systems, and vulnerable populations across different regions.

·       Explore the relationship between climate-induced shocks (e.g., droughts, floods, pests) and food insecurity.

·       Learn to design and implement climate-smart agricultural practices that enhance productivity while promoting environmental sustainability.

·       Assess risks and vulnerabilities within food systems using climate and livelihood assessment tools.

·       Develop integrated strategies for building household and community resilience to climate-related disruptions.

·       Understand early warning systems, adaptive planning, and emergency response frameworks that protect food security during crises.

·       Identify policy frameworks and global commitments (e.g., SDGs, Paris Agreement) that support climate resilience and food systems development.

·       Strengthen capacity to develop and manage climate-resilient food security programs at local, national, and institutional levels.

·       Promote inclusive and sustainable approaches that empower women, youth, and marginalized groups in building resilient food systems.
