Introduction

Climate change poses significant challenges for communities, ecosystems, and economies, making resilience and adaptation planning a global priority. Geospatial technologies such as GIS and remote sensing have emerged as powerful tools for analyzing climate risks, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and designing adaptive strategies that strengthen resilience.

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of how spatial data, advanced geospatial modeling, and climate science can be integrated to monitor, assess, and respond to climate-related hazards. Participants will learn to apply GIS and remote sensing in climate vulnerability assessments, disaster risk reduction, and adaptive infrastructure planning.

A strong focus is placed on emerging methodologies that combine remote sensing datasets with socio-economic indicators, enabling a holistic understanding of how climate change disproportionately affects different populations and sectors. Through this approach, the course promotes climate justice and equitable adaptation planning.

Participants will also engage with case studies demonstrating the role of spatial technologies in supporting national climate action plans, international frameworks such as the Paris Agreement, and sustainable development goals. These real-world examples will illustrate how climate-smart decision-making contributes to both local resilience and global commitments.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with advanced technical skills and strategic insights to design, implement, and evaluate climate resilience initiatives using spatial data-driven approaches. Emphasis will be placed on building practical competence through hands-on exercises, scenario modeling, and application of advanced tools.

Ultimately, this course empowers professionals to leverage GIS and remote sensing as catalysts for resilience, enabling adaptive planning that safeguards people, infrastructure, and ecosystems from the escalating impacts of climate change.
