Course Introduction

Climate policy and international environmental agreements form the backbone of global efforts to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how international climate governance systems are designed, negotiated, and implemented across nations.

The program explores key global frameworks such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement. Participants will gain insight into how these agreements shape national policies and global environmental commitments.

A strong focus is placed on climate diplomacy, negotiation processes, and the role of state and non-state actors in shaping international environmental outcomes. The course highlights how political, economic, and scientific factors influence global environmental decision-making.

Participants will also examine carbon markets, climate finance mechanisms, and adaptation and mitigation strategies embedded within international agreements. These instruments are essential for achieving global emissions reduction targets and sustainable development goals.

The course further explores compliance, reporting obligations, and accountability mechanisms that ensure countries meet their environmental commitments. It also addresses challenges such as equity, climate justice, and differentiated responsibilities among nations.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to critically analyze climate policies, understand international negotiation frameworks, and evaluate the effectiveness of global environmental agreements.
