Course Introduction

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a major driver of migration and human displacement worldwide. Rising sea levels, desertification, extreme weather events, and resource scarcity are forcing communities to relocate, creating new challenges for policymakers, humanitarian actors, and development planners.

Geospatial technologies such as GIS and remote sensing provide essential tools for analyzing patterns of displacement, identifying vulnerable populations, and predicting areas at risk. These technologies enable data-driven planning that ensures better preparedness, response, and long-term resilience strategies.

This course is designed to equip participants with both theoretical insights and practical skills in using geospatial methods for mapping and analyzing climate-induced migration. It integrates disaster risk reduction, human security, and sustainable development perspectives.

Participants will learn to map displacement flows, analyze environmental hotspots, and assess the spatial relationship between climate hazards and migration pressures. Emphasis will be placed on real-world case studies and the integration of satellite imagery with demographic and socio-economic datasets.

The course also highlights emerging approaches such as predictive analytics, AI applications in displacement mapping, and the use of mobile and participatory data collection tools. This ensures that learners can apply the latest innovations in their professional contexts.

By the end of the course, participants will have the capacity to design geospatial solutions that support humanitarian response, policy development, and resilience-building strategies for populations impacted by climate-induced migration and displacement.
