Course Introduction

Agriculture and food systems are highly vulnerable to climate change, with rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, droughts, and floods significantly affecting productivity, food security, and rural livelihoods. Climate finance plays a critical role in supporting adaptation and mitigation strategies across agricultural value chains and rural economies.

As global populations grow, the demand for resilient food systems has intensified, requiring innovative financing mechanisms that support sustainable agriculture, climate-smart farming, and rural infrastructure development. Financial systems must evolve to address risks while enabling long-term investment in rural resilience.

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how climate finance is applied within agriculture, food systems, and rural development sectors. It explores funding mechanisms that support farmers, agribusinesses, cooperatives, and rural institutions in adapting to climate impacts and transitioning to sustainable practices.

Participants will examine blended finance models, agricultural insurance systems, green subsidies, and development funding frameworks designed to enhance food system resilience. The course also explores how public and private capital can be mobilized to strengthen rural economies and supply chains.

A strong focus is placed on integrating climate risk assessment, sustainability standards, and investment planning into agricultural finance systems. Participants will learn how to evaluate projects that enhance productivity while reducing environmental degradation and emissions.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design and manage climate finance solutions that strengthen food security, improve rural livelihoods, and build resilient agricultural systems across developing and emerging economies.
