Course Introduction

Development banks play a central role in mobilizing, structuring, and channeling climate finance toward sustainable development projects that address both mitigation and adaptation priorities. As climate risks intensify, these institutions are increasingly responsible for ensuring that capital flows support resilient infrastructure, low-carbon transitions, and inclusive economic growth.

Climate finance within development banking involves complex operational systems that integrate project appraisal, risk assessment, concessional financing, and blended finance mechanisms. This course provides a deep understanding of how development banks design financial products that align with climate objectives while maintaining financial sustainability.

Participants will explore how multilateral development banks, national development banks, and regional financial institutions operate within global climate finance architectures. The course examines their role in supporting governments, private sector actors, and communities in implementing climate-resilient development projects.

A strong focus is placed on operational frameworks such as project preparation, due diligence, financial structuring, and impact assessment. Participants will learn how climate considerations are embedded into every stage of development bank operations, from project origination to portfolio management.

The course also examines innovative financing tools such as green bonds, climate funds, blended finance instruments, and risk-sharing facilities. These tools are critical for unlocking private capital and scaling up climate investments in developing economies.

By the end of the program, participants will be able to understand development bank operations in depth, structure climate finance solutions, and support the implementation of large-scale sustainable development and climate resilience projects.
