Course Introduction

Climate finance and carbon markets are becoming increasingly interconnected pillars of the global climate governance system. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how financial systems, carbon pricing mechanisms, and emissions trading frameworks interact to drive low-carbon economic transformation across sectors and regions.

Participants will explore the architecture of global carbon markets, including compliance and voluntary systems, and how they interface with climate finance flows. The course highlights how carbon pricing mechanisms incentivize emissions reductions while mobilizing private and public capital for climate action.

A strong focus is placed on integrating carbon market instruments into broader climate finance strategies, including green bonds, sustainability-linked finance, and results-based climate funding. Learners will understand how carbon assets are created, priced, and traded within evolving financial ecosystems.

The program examines the role of governments, multilateral institutions, and private investors in shaping carbon market regulation and climate finance mobilization. Participants will analyze how policy frameworks influence market stability, transparency, and investment confidence.

Special attention is given to carbon market design, including emissions trading systems, offset mechanisms, and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Case studies illustrate how countries and corporations are aligning financial strategies with carbon market participation.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design and implement integrated climate finance and carbon market strategies that enhance emissions reduction outcomes and unlock large-scale climate investment.
